The sciatic nerve is a bundle of nerves running down from the low back, mainly L-2 to L-4, down the buttocks and behind the knee to the foot.
Sciatica pain can arise from many different causes, from physical activity, sport related accidents, and the long term chronic form that usually comes from Arthritis in the lower back.
Pressure on the nerve trunk causes inflammation in the nerve that is felt as pain. A common form of Sciatica pain comes from Arthritis in the lower back, and the pain that comes from inflammation of the perifomis muscle. The Sciatica nerve passes very close to the muscle and inflammation in it creates pressure on the nerve.
A common treatment is anti-inflammatory drugs and exercises. One of the fastest and best treatments is Acupuncture. The needles of Acupuncture both reduce the pain and increase circulation in the area of the nerve inflammation, and promote healing of the nerve.
In Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a physical condition like this refers to as a blockage of Qi (energy) and blood in specific meridians. The Acupuncture “opens the channels,” the meridians, and create free flow of Qi and blood, that relieve the inflammation and reduce the pain.
Acupuncture is safe, there are no side effects, works fast, and can treat the weakness that brought about the injury in the first place.
In my clinic, I use a combination of Acupuncture, different Homeopathic and herbal anti-inflammatory remedies. It seems to work as fast and effectively as any drug.
